As an Underwriting Assistant within Business Insurance, you will participate as a team member supporting a designated group of stakeholders such as sales teams or independent agents. Underwriting Assistants provide timely and high quality customer service to underwriters and agencies by rating and entering transactions for commercial lines of business. In addition, they seek to grow as a continuous improvement practitioner by relentlessly reflecting, seeking out waste and eliminating it while simultaneously improving the customer's experience.
/ Please Note: This position is posted at a Senior Underwriting Assistant level. Consideration will be provided to candidates who may qualify for the Underwriting Assistant level depending on candidate qualifications./

Responsibilities:
Utilizes continuous process improvement work principles to ensure that policy transactions are issued and changes are recorded accurately and in a timely manner by rating and/or entering transactions for commercial lines of business. Such transactions may include quotes, new business, endorsements, cancellations or renewals.
Communicates with team members or agencies to obtain and/or clarify information for the rating and entry process.
May order miscellaneous reports needed in the rating and underwriting processes, such as Motor Vehicle Reports, loss history reports, credit checks, outside inspections and loss control.
Provides administrative and general clerical support to assure efficient operation of the team.
Actively participates in problem solving activities to define problems, assess current state root causes, design and test solutions, implement solutions, and continuously improve to permanently eliminate problems.
Actively participates in continuous improvement by fully engaging in daily huddles, generating suggestions, following appropriate procedures and continuous process improvement standard work principles, participating in problem solving activities, and utilizing continuous improvement tools to support the work of the team.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED and three or more years of related work experience preferred.
Knowledge of commercial lines underwriting guidelines to perform transactions within authority limit such as renewals, endorsements and cancellations is preferred. Attention to detail and strong time management skills.
Ability to plan work independently.
Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to provide and accept feedback.
Intermediate computer and software skills (e.g., MS Excel/Word).
Ability to focus on service and build relationships with agencies and other departments; must exemplify teamwork.
Ability to interpret and execute more complicated underwriting instructions and to analyze and solve problems.
